There are many subcategories of jazz that each have their own distinct qualities and characteristics. Some of the most popular ones include, Commercial or Broadway styles.
Today, Jazz dance is present in many different forms and, thrives in dance schools throughout the world. It continues to be an essential part of musical theatre choreography. It is sometimes interwoven with other dance styles as appropriate for that particular show.
Jazz dancing can be seen in some music videos in the form of Commercial Jazz which also draws on the styles of hip hop and funk.
Choreography, style and technique are the 3 distinct qualities which define a Jazz Style.
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary Dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth century. It has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world.
Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet, and other classical dance styles.
It contains elements of floor work and more movement in the upper body than classical ballet (contractions & releases). It encourages off balance or counterbalance techniques and often uses improvisation.
LYRICAL
Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques and is closely related to those styles. Lyrical dancing is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements, to express strong emotions through the choreography and interpret or create the feeling from the lyrics in the chosen song.
RAD CLASSICAL BALLET
Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music, using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures. Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful movements and the use of pointe shoes with reinforced toes.
It is theatrical – performed on a stage to an audience utilizing costumes, scenic design and lighting. It can tell a story or express a thought, concept or emotion. Ballet can be magical, exciting and thought provoking.
The RAD was created with the objective to improve the standard of ballet teaching in the UK and, in pursuit of that goal, a new teaching method and dance technique was developed.
The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is one of the largest dance organisations in the world with over 14,000 members in 79 countries, and includes around 7,500 who hold Registered Teacher Status. There are currently about 1,000 students in full-time or part-time teacher training programmes with the RAD, and each year about 250,000 candidates enter RAD examinations worldwide.
Our student’s at Rize are taught the RAD Syllabus and have the opportunity to participate in yearly examinations, which as shown above are recognised worldwide.
HIP HOP
Hip-hop is a dance style, usually danced to hip-hop music, that evolved from the hip-hop culture.
Hip-hop is a very energetic form of dancing and can include elements of breaking, popping, locking, freestyle movement and choreography.
Constantly evolving, it is free, funky & soulful expression of movement used by Artists such as Beyonce, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake & Missy Elliott.
MUSICAL THEATRE
Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humour, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Popular examples of Musical Theatre shows are Wicked, Matilda the Musical, Lion King, 42nd Street & Cabaret.
Musical Theatre performers are normally required to be triple threats of the industry; they sing, dance & act!
